When ignited, the battery powers the solenoid to push the pinion into mesh with the flywheel while closing the main circuit. The high-power DC motor turns the crankshaft to start the engine. After startup, the overrunning clutch slips and disengages automatically to prevent the high-speed engine from back-driving and damaging the starter. Widely used in gasoline/diesel vehicles and construction machinery engines.
